Digital taper system for benefit expected in budget, but those already hit with overpayments will still have to pay “On the surface it sounds really positive – and I really hope that it is,” says unpaid carer Guy Shahar of the government’s decision to abolish the notorious carer’s allowance cliff edge . But Shahar is angry that most carers hit with unjust overpayments in the past will still have to repay them, for all the promise of a different future. And he notes the cliff edge remains in place for four more years, potentially catching out more carers. Continue reading...

A taper is much better than a cliff-edge. But problems with carer’s allowance should have been solved years ago The reform of carer’s allowance – a benefit paid to people who spend 35 or more hours a week caring for a disabled relative – is overdue and welcome. The cliff-edge design that forces claimants in England and Wales to forfeit their entire payment if they breach an earnings limit of £204 a week by as little as a penny is wrong in principle and made much worse by the appalling way in which rules have been applied. A Guardian investigation revealed that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) failed to warn thousands of people who it knew were being overpaid. This resulted in debts and hardship, and hundreds of criminal convictions for frau

Diane La Rosa and Teresa Pacey-Devlin on the deaths of their fathers during the pandemic. Plus more letters responding to the Covid inquiry from John Robinson , David Flood and James Townsend My dad was in a care home when Covid hit in March 2020 and visits were stopped ( UK government failures led to Covid spreading ‘like wildfire’ in care homes, inquiry finds, 20 October ). It was heartbreaking not being able to see him, and talking to him via phone was almost impossible. I couldn’t see how Covid wouldn’t spread to the home as there wasn’t any testing at that point. He was a sitting duck and there was nothing I could do. In late April 2020, when I had been calling all day, eventually someone answered and told me they were too busy to talk. The next day when I called, I was told Dad wasn’

Readers respond to an article by Sam Wollaston about Norfolk’s fridge mountain Sam Wollaston ( What an eyesore! My day at Norfolk’s frightful fridge mountain, 21 October ) highlights an urgent issue, but misses a key underlying driver: the reality of climate change and increasingly hot UK summers. Many standard UK fridge-freezers are only built to normal (N) ambient climate classes, rated to operate in temperatures up to +32C. During recent heatwaves, indoor temperatures in many homes regularly exceed this limit. Even subtropical (ST) rated units fail when ambient temperatures push past 38C. When ambient limits are exceeded, cooling systems fail, leading to compressor breakdown, spoiled food and premature appliance disposal. Continue reading...

Life-saving | Winning words | Advice for young workers | New/old brooms | Not just any old iron Thank you for the article on body donation ( My mother donated her body to science. I really wasn’t prepared for what came next, 24 October ). How about adding a link online to how people can donate their own or a connected person’s body in the UK, together with giving blood or plasma in life? When our brother died in the 1960s, our parents agreed that any useful bits could be recycled. I came late to regular blood-giving; even so, with the retirement age abolished, my number is over 100. Join us? Peter Bottomley London • The Word wheel puzzle in your print edition states “there is at least one nine-letter word to be found”. The nine-letter solution given for the puzzle of 20 October was “intric

Responding to a Guardian investigation into trafficking, former British ambassador to Colombia Keith Morris says the ‘war on drugs’ has failed I congratulate the Guardian on this investigation ( Latin American organised crime ‘may operate in 16 European countries’, 13 October ). It has already prompted a strong call from the former Colombian vice-president Marta Lucía Ramírez for effective international cooperation to counter the transnational criminal threat. I have followed the “war on drugs” pretty closely since I was the British ambassador to Colombia in the heyday of Pablo Escobar, but I was still shocked to learn of the scale of the Latin American criminal presence in Europe, including supposedly political insurgents such as the Colombian ELN and various Farc dissident factions.
